Jay’s Journal – 21 September 2012

Jay Saunders
It’s great to be into the next round of the Trophy following last week’s victory at Needham Market, and it was nice to get a result when I don’t think we were particularly fancied to do so.

I actually don’t think 4-3 was a fair reflection of the game and we were generally comfortable apart from the short spell after we went 4-1 up. I think after we got our fourth think we believed the game was won, and subsequently we switched off with a couple of lapses that resulted in goals.

Before the game we go over who is marking who and we were doing this well, however for their second goal this did not happen and we did not pick up our players for a long throw. For the third goal Nicky Humphrey tried to nick the ball when he probably could have held the player up in the corner, and again probably showed that we lost our concentration for a period.

That said after the third went in our concentration levels returned, and we did really well seeing the game out when we could have crumbled.

Graeme Andrews picked up a hamstring injury last week, and although he did some light training on Thursday night we won’t know whether he can play until Saturday. Steve Ward is probably still a week or so away, however we can now welcome back Gavin Greenfield who has finished Olympic/Paralympic duty with army.

Gavin will travel with the squad tomorrow and will warm up with the boys, however we will be looking to get him out on dual registration with a Kent League team so we can really test his knee and he can get his match sharpness back.

Ian Draycott is also finally in contention after recovering from his ankle injury and a bruised rib, and will travel with us tomorrow. Ade Olorunda will also travel, but as I have said before we won’t be rushing his hamstring, especially with Shaun and Boothy being in the form they are.

Steve Ward went to watch Grays play on Tuesday and it will be another tough game against one of the favourites in the Ryman North. It is a big pitch and they have dangerous, pacy players out wide, but we must go there and make them worry about us – then hopefully we can get the result we want and get into the hat for the third qualifying round.
