Tonbridge Angels 1-0 Maidstone United

Monday 25 August // Ryman League Premier Division // Attendance: 1168 // Report by Ruth Tunnell

Its always disappointing to lose to a 90th minute goal. Let alone when the match is against your local rivals and the strike means your one hundred percent start to the season is brought to a sudden halt.

But that is what happened to the Stones away at Tonbridge Angels on a soaking wet Bank Holiday Monday. And whilst Maidstone probably deserved a share of the points, they never really got going meaning that Kyle Merson in the Angels goal had a quiet afternoon.

The opening 15 minutes were, in contrast to the rest of the game, quite lively. With six minutes gone, Billy Medlock charged down an attempted clearance from Lee Worgan. Medlock steadied himself with a sensible touch and he probably should have given the Angels the lead but his curling effort went wide of the left hand post.

The home side then had a decent penalty appeal waived away when Alex Flisher appeared to trip James Folkes inside the area. With the Angels still protesting, Maidstone broke quickly and Jack Parter slipped leaving Frannie Collin racing towards goal down the right. With Merson off his line, Collin elected for the early shot and he dragged his effort wide of the far post.

Shortly afterwards, Matt Bodkin’s high cross from the right was met by Flisher but he was unable to direct his looping header on target. Then it wasn’t until the 38th minute that there was much to note when Jack Parkinson brought down his brother Tom and from 30 yards, Lee Carey’s low free-kick skidded off the grass and went just wide.

The last action of the first half saw former Maidstone defender Jerrome Sobers concede a corner. This was taken by Flisher and his cross from the Stones’ left was met by the arriving Jamie Coyle who saw his header fly well wide.

Not long after the interval, Tom Mills lost possession in midfield allowing Tonbridge to move forwards quickly. Dee Okojie found Alex Teniola and he played the ball to the former Maidstone striker Tommy Whitnell. Whitnell’s initial shot was blocked and when the ball came back to him, he curled it just wide.

Bodkin then had an opportunity from a Flisher cross but his powerful header sailed over the bar and Flisher was involved again with 73 minutes on the clock. The Maidstone winger did well down the left and drove over a low cross which Sobers put inches wide of the left hand post.

Five minutes later, Flisher had an even better opportunity to give the Stones the lead. Jack Parkinson picked out Flisher down the left and he drove into the area before firing a low shot past the far post.

Then just as it looked the game was going to peter out into a stalemate, the home side grabbed a late winner. With 90 minutes on the clock, Tom Parkinson was allowed the time to find substitute Flavio Tavares and he knocked the ball onto Teniola who was given the space to get a low shot away from close to the edge of the area which appeared to take a deflection as it flew past the diving Worgan and into the net.
