Beckenham Town 1-3 Maidstone United

Saturday 18 July // Pre-Season Friendly // Attendance: // Report by Ruth Tunnell

In a game that had a very similar feel to the victory over Sevenoaks Town on Thursday night, the Stones beat former Kent League rivals Beckenham Town by the same scoreline thanks to goals from Alex Brown, Frannie Collin and Jack Paxman.

Maidstone dominated possession in the early stages on a perfect pitch and created numerous chances. The best of these came with 11 minutes plated when Alex Brown was involved and Steve Watt pushed into an advanced position. Watt slipped the ball into Frannie Collin who then dragged the ball wide of the left hand post.

But just five minutes later, the Stones opened the scoring. The impressive Jack Paxman did well to intercept the ball in midfield and he fed Brown who went on a surging forwards run. Brown then passed to Paxman again whose cross came back out to Brown and the Maidstone midfielder showed good technique to bury the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

It wasn’t long until the Stones doubled their lead. Mitchell Pinnock’s cross was blatantly handled inside the box and Frannie Collin stepped up to dispatch the resultant penalty.

One minute before the break, Maidstone strung together a neat move. Paxman found Jay May who dinked the ball over the top of the Beckenham defence to Collin only for the Maidstone striker’s shot to go just wide of the right hand post.

Just like on Thursday night, there were less goal scoring chances in the second half. However, on 52 minutes, Paxman showed good composure to beat Beckenham’s goal keeper with easy before slotting home and then with 19 minutes left, the Reds scored a consolation goal. Maidstone’s defence couldn’t get the ball clear and Andrew Thompson was able to sweep the ball in from close range.
