Thursday 16 July // Pre-Season Friendly // Attendance: 170 // Report by Ruth Tunnell
The Stones have got their first win of pre-season as they eased to victory over Southern Counties East side Sevenoaks Town.
Maidstone were the stronger of the two sides in the first half in particular with Bobby-Joe Taylor causing the Sevenoaks defence problems on a number of occasions. And it was Taylor who had a hand in the opening goal when his corner picked out Jack Parkinson who headed the ball back towards goal where it was accidently diverted into the net via the post by Austin Gacheru.
Shortly afterwards, Matt Bodkin did well to gain possession and he picked out Charley Robertson. Robertson got a low drive away from the edge of the area only for Richard Stroud in the Sevenoaks goal to push it wide of the post.
With 31 minutes played, Alex Akrofi managed to cross to Bodkin who chested the ball down before shooting off target. It wasn’t long before Bodkin was involved again though as just three minutes later, he was put into a good position by Reece Butler but once more, Stroud made a decent save.
However, just two minutes before the break, Maidstone doubled their lead. Butler slipped another fine pass down the left which this time was intended for Akrofi and the Maidstone striker rolled the ball past the on-rushing Stroud.
There was little to note in the second half until Will Godman made a good save to deny substitute Ellis Wilson-Joseph and Tom Mills extended Maidstone’s lead with 13 minutes remaining. But the final goal went to Sevenoaks who made the scoreline more respectable thanks to a fine cross from Gacheru who found substitute Michael Fahm who lashed the ball past the stranded Godman from close range.
