I don’t think I have faced Oxford City before in my career. We have had them watched twice since the season began though. From the reports and videos I have seen they are a very good side. When we got the fixtures I always felt that the opening games were going to be very hard so no doubt it will be another tough test.
Oxford like to play a lot of football and they have got a bit of pace in their side which will be another challenge. But its one we look forward to and we are at home. We haven’t lost many at the Gallagher Stadium over the years and after losing on Tuesday night the lads will want to make sure that we bounce back with another win.
At the start of the season I set the players a little points target for the first three games and we are still in with a chance of reaching that target so I hope that we do.
I have probably had my starting 11 in mind since Wednesday and possibly even since Tuesday night after the game. Sometimes you struggle to sleep after matches so you go through things in your head. I then read the report on Oxford when it arrived on Wednesday and I definitely knew then how we would set up. I have since spoken to Jamie and Nick and got their views and they agreed with me as well.
There were some positives from the game on Tuesday night. Ebbsfleet are probably a little bit further advanced than we are. They have been up towards the top of the league for a few years now. I said to the lads at training that we mustn’t get too down. The level Ebbsfleet are at is where we want to get to and its going to take a little while as we have only just been promoted.
I still think we can have a very good season though. I said before it started that I would like to try and make the playoffs and I see no reason why after two games that we couldn’t have a go at that. What we have seen is that the top five or six teams in this league are very strong compared to the Ryman Premier.
Of those top teams, the majority of them have been established at this level for a number of years now. We are new to it but we are enjoying it although don’t get me wrong, I hate losing. It’s good to be playing different teams and there is still that buzz around the ground. There is a different feel to it, it’s a different standard of football and it’s a better quality of football. Hopefully we can adapt to it sooner rather than later and have a good season.
The new stand added to the atmosphere on Tuesday night. I still think that our supporters could get a bit louder and they probably know that as well but I am sure they will up the volume as the season goes on.
