On Saturday Maidstone United will travel to Chippenham Town in the FA Cup. The winners of the tie will be in the draw for the first round proper of the competition and could face league opposition in their next cup match. We caught up with Matt Bodkin head of the trip to Chippenham.
“If I am honest I don’t know that much about Chippenham. That is no disrespect to them it’s just that they are in a different league to ourselves and you don’t pay too much attention to other sides who are not in your league. But I do know that they have had a very good start to the season and that it will be a tough match on Saturday. You always know that at some point in the FA Cup you are going to get a difficult game and I think that the Chippenham match will be one.
We will go through things for the game on Thursday night in training. Before any match we always have a chat about how the opposition play and what we should look out for.
In a way, the run we had in the FA Cup last season makes winning Saturday’s game seem even more significant. Once you have had a taste for success you always want more. There was so much excitement around the FA Cup last year. It wasn’t just in the dressing room as you could tell there was a buzz and vibe around the whole town too. It was awesome and to be part of a club which has such a large support makes the big games against the likes of Stevenage even more special.
It is hard to put into words just how good the Stevenage match was. On the night I was so focused on doing a decent job and making sure that we weren’t going to get beaten by higher league opposition. When we went 1-0 up in the first couple of minutes that was just amazing. You could smell an upset then. The feeling when we got the winner is so hard to describe. I don’t think I will get to replicate that too many times over the rest of my career. When we scored, I jumped off the bench so high that I hit the top of my on the dugout which takes some doing for a small guy! It was just amazing when we got back into the dressing room as well after the game and of course we would all love to have such an experience again this season.
I have been enjoying this season so far too. At the start I think we were all a bit hit and miss and it took us a little while to adjust to the new league. I think we soon got rid of the fear though and perhaps we were giving sides more respect that we needed to but I don’t know why that was. I think we have shown recently that we can do well in this league. Before we got started there were plenty of mixed opinions on how we would do. Some were saying we would do well to survive and then others were saying mid table would be decent. Our form at the moment would see us finishing in the play-offs and I hope we can turn that into reality.
