Matt Bodkin

Matt Bodkin FA Cup Interview

I am definitely looking forward to tomorrow’s game against Yeovil. I am a bit excited to be honest. I think I am too old to get nervous these days as you sort of know how things will be and so you just look forward to such matches.

The fact that there will TV coverage makes it more of an occasion and so it won’t be like our usual games. It is great for the club and us as players to get a bit of exposure. When you are growing up you want to be a footballer in games that go out on the TV and so it’s quite nice that in a small way we are getting to fulfil some of our dreams.

When you are a non league footballer these sorts of games don’t come around often. It is a chance to enjoy the experience and make some memories like we did against Stevenage last season. The build up to the game feels very similar to that which happened last year and I hope we can repeat what we managed against Stevenage and make it to the next round.

We do have a certain amount of confidence going into tomorrow’s game as we have been on a good run. Although league form doesn’t really come into it, it does help us to an extent. In our last league match against Concord Rangers we didn’t really get to grips with the game in the first half. In a way it was a bit of a horrible game where we had to scrap but we got our act together in the end and in a few minutes we showed what we were capable of as we turned the game around. We know though that overall our performance at Concord wasn’t good enough.

I have heard the chant about me from the fans a number of times now. It does make me laugh and smile. I enjoy it because it means that the fans have accepted me and I will take anything as long as it is a good and positive call!

I hope there will be a big atmosphere against Yeovil tomorrow. There is due to be a record crowd which I believe will be around the 3000 mark. That sort of attendance is just phenomenal for a club at our level. I think it will mean that the atmosphere will be above and beyond what it was like against Stevenage. Fingers crossed that Maidstone’s fans will drown out any chants from Yeovil and that will help to make it a fantastic afternoon.
