Sweeney gets England C call up

Dan Sweeney has been called up to the England C squad ahead of this weekend’s fixture.

Paul Fairclough’s side take on Slovakia U21s in an International Challenge Trophy game on Sunday afternoon at Gander Green Lane – home of Sutton United.

Sweeney and Stones team mate Jack Paxman were on a contingency list for the match when the squad was announced a fortnight ago.

He said: “I got a call last night to see if I’d be available for the game. It’s a great achievement to be part of the England C squad, regardless of my involvement on the day. It will be a great experience, Slovakia are a very good side and it will be a big test for us.”

Stones boss Jay Saunders added: “I am delighted for Sweens – this will be a good opportunity for him to train and play alongside some of the best players in the non-league game. I hope there will be chances for him, Jack Paxman and other squad players to take part in England C fixtures in the future.”

Admission to the match is free of charge and kick off is at 14:00.
