The Bee Gees were number one the last time Maidstone United kicked off their FA Cup campaign in the fourth qualifying round.
1987 was the year and the song was You Win Again – apt as that was exactly what the Stones did with a 2-0 victory over Dartford.
That season saw Maidstone reach the third round, where they went out to Sheffield United by a goal to nil.
This weekend, 64 teams compete for a place in the first round proper – the stage at which clubs from Sky Bet Leagues One and Two enter the competition.
Success for the Stones on Saturday will make it three seasons in a row that the first round has been reached, so make sure you’re at the Gallagher as the most famous domestic cup competition in the world comes to town.
Club captain Lee Worgan said: “The FA Cup is special competition for every non-league player. Unlike previous seasons where we’ve needed two or three wins, we go into Saturday’s match 90 minutes from the first round.
“It’s going to be a tough game – Billericay will have the same mentality as we did against Welling a couple of seasons ago. Hopefully we’ll have a good crowd behind us, get the win and look forward to the draw on TV next Monday.”
Saturday’s match against Billericay Town is pay on the day and gates open at 12:30.
(If you fancy a bit of 80s nostalgia, have a sing along to this!)
