Maidstone United’s double-winners from the 2001/02 season are getting back together a month today to support the then team captain.
Fifteen years ago Paul Foley wore the Stones captain’s armband and proudly lifted the Kent League and Cup trophies.
Life today is immeasurably different. Diagnosed with a brain stem cell tumour in September 2012, he had six weeks of intensive radiotherapy, followed by two full courses of chemotherapy. Sadly, his condition has deteriorated to the point of severely limited mobility.
Writing on his Go Fund Me page, Paul commented: ‘Having been a fit and active 40 year old that played sports every week prior to this diagnosis it is a very dramatic impact in life but I am trying to maintain some semblance of normality as far as possible.’
The fundraising page has already raised £25,000 and it’s hoped that the benefit match on Saturday 17 June will help the total towards the £30,000 target.
That game will see the Stones of 2001/02 taking on Ramsgate’s double-winning side of 1998/99. Paul played a massive in both clubs and this is an opportunity for fans of both sides to come along and support him, while catching up with some of the players of yesteryear.
Kick off will be at 15:00. Admission is a minimum of £5 for adults, children aged 11 and under are free. All proceeds will go to assist Paul with his care and equipment.
