Walking football is the fasting growing sport for men in Europe, especially suitable for men over 50 who can no longer play faster paced games.
Maidstone United has a well-established walking football group, which meets Friday evenings at the Y Centre, off Loose Road, Maidstone, from 18:30. We are looking to add to our player numbers as the game grows in Kent.
Health benefits of over 50s football
Walking football is especially valuable for men. Reports say that physically active men have a 20-30% reduced risk of premature death and 50% less chronic disease. However, by the age of 55-64, only 32% of men say that they take the recommended half hour of exercise five times a week.
Walking football is one answer to this issue. It is known that men who play regularly have better cardiovascular systems and also have lower heart rate and blood pressure, less fat and better oxygen absorption.
Healthy body = healthy mind
The psychological benefits of walking football are as important as the physiological ones. A study done among older men playing walking football shows that they have high levels of what is termed ‘flow,’ which really means psychological reward and satisfaction.
It gives membership of a group, and provides comradeship, shared experiences and fun and the reward of taking part with your mates.
Maidstone United Staggerers
The Staggerers have been established for two years. We meet and play informally every Friday on a 3G surface and the cost is £3 per session.
We play for fun and fitness but compete in informal tournaments around the county and have the distinction of winning two competitions in the past year and coming second in three others.
The game is expanding and we would like to open the opportunity to other new players to join us, so if you are interested – aged 50 plus – just come and meet us at the Y centre on Fridays or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for more details.
All welcome, we look forward to seeing you.
