Tuesday 11 July // Pre-Season Friendly // Report by Ruth Tunnell
Maidstone United got their first pre-season victory under their belt with a comfortable 3-1 victory over VCD Athletic.
The Stones went close early on when Joe Anderson put over an inviting cross for Tom Wraight and Wraight’s header was inches wide of the left hand post. But on 15 minutes, it was the home side who edged in front thanks to Kamarl Duncan.
Joe Pigott then hit the post for the Stones before Delano Sam-Yorke saw an effort saved by the legs of Ronan Forde. However, Maidstone did finally draw level when trialist Tyler Campbell hooked in Pigott’s cross at the far post.
By now, the Stones looked the stronger of the two sides and they went close again when Seth Nana Twumasi persisted down the right and struck a shot which clipped the top of the bar. And not long after the break, Wraight’s free-kick from the edge of the box was only just scrambled clear by Forde.
Then on 56 minutes, Maidstone took the lead. Pigott played the ball back to Anderson who played a decent ball into the path of Campbell and he took a touch to steady himself before lashing a fine finish into the net.
Jay Saunders took the opportunity to make a number of substitutions in the second half and it was one of these, Jack Richards, who caught the eye in the remaining moments. First of all he forced Forde into a one handed save after he had been on a run to the touchline and then with 11 minutes remaining, he won a free-kick just outside the box which he curled into the left hand side of the net.
