Macclesfield away

Macclesfield Town 1-4 Maidstone United

Saturday 16 September // Vanarama National League // Attendance: 1,347 (122 Maidstone United fans) // Report by Ruth Tunnell

Zavon Hines once again caught the eye for the Stones as he grabbed two goals in Maidstone’s comprehensive win away at Macclesfield Town.

Although the home side were poor during the first half it was Seth Nana Twumasi, in for the injured Josh Hare, who set the tone for Maidstone’s strong performance with two excellent tackles early on in the game. Both times he dispossessed Scott Wilson with impeccable timing and the first of the challenges, which was inside the box, prevented Wilson from having a goal scoring opportunity.

Then with 11 minutes played Maidstone went in front. Joe Piggott knocked the ball down in an advanced position and Keith Lowe was unable to clear his lines. The ball broke to the edge of the box and Hines stepped up to drill a fine low finish into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

By now, the Stones were looking the stronger of the two sides and they could have added to their tally when Twumasi crossed for Johan ter Horst whose flicked header towards the near post flew across the face of goal. Shortly after this, ter Horst got on the end of a deep cross from Joe Anderson and his header was on target but Shwan Jalal made a decent save to push the ball wide.

But Jalal was powerless to prevent Maidstone from extending their lead on 24 minutes. Hines took a short corner to Jai Reason who sent a deep cross towards the back post. There to meet the ball was ter Horst but although he swung his leg, he couldn’t make sufficient contact and this allowed Alex Wynter to arrive to smash the ball over the line.

Moments after this Stuart Lewis battled well to win the ball deep in the Macclesfield half. He played the ball to Reason who crossed to the unmarked Pigott who was about 10 yards from goal and he put his header wide of the right post.

The second half got off to a slow start with the Stones content to sit off the home side and defend their lead. This meant that that Macclesfield began to grow in confidence and they created their first opportunity on 59 minutes. Ryan Lloyd managed to feed the ball into Wilson who couldn’t control the pass and the ball went straight to Lee Worgan in the Maidstone goal. Then two minutes later, Elliott Durrell hit a slow shot from the edge of the box but Worgan made a comfortable diving save.

Despite being the quieter of the two sides after the break, the Stones suddenly found themselves further ahead on 65 minutes. Reece Prestedge slipped the ball to Hines who showed good feet to make room for a rising shot which took a deflection off Kieran Kennedy and looped into the far corner of the net.

And matters got even better for Maidstone when they scored a fourth 16 minutes from time. Twumasi sent a long ball forwards which Pigott did well to control inside the box. Pigott seemed to have been forced too wide to be a threat but somehow he squeezed the ball under Jalal from a very tight angle.

The Stones then survived a strong penalty appeal from the home side when Wynter appeared to clip Gime Toure before Macclesfield got a consolation goal. The ball broke to substitute Koby Arthur who was about 12 yards out and he hit a hard low shot which flew past Worgan.
