Maidstone United’s disappointing run of league form shows no sign of ending after Ebbsfleet United completed the double over the Stones at the Gallagher Stadium.
There was a bright start to the game. On two minutes, Sean Shields crossed to Jack Powell but his header was deflected not far wide. Shortly after this, Dave Winfield caught the ball well with a volley from close to the edge of the area but he was denied by a decent block by Magnus Okuonghae.
After this the Stones came into the game more. A deep corner from Jai Reason was met by Joe Pigott and his header went into the side netting.
Apart from a mistake from the Ebbsfleet defence which gave Jamar Loza a sniff of goal which ended with his shot being blocked, there was then nothing else to note until after the break when the Fleet took the lead with seconds of the restart. A poor clearance from Seth Nana Twumasi went straight to Jack Powell who was just inside the box and he picked his spot and sent the ball past Lee Worgan.
The Fleet’s lead didn’t last long however, as on 55 minutes, a low ball in from Twumasi went to Joe Pigott who saw his effort blocked. The ball went back to Twumasi who delivered the perfect cross for Joe Anderson to power a header past Nathan Ashmore.
But just six minutes later, Ebbsfleet went in front again with a goal that had an element of fortune about it. Reece Prestedge lost the ball to Andy Drury who fed Powell down the left and his shot took a deflection which sent it past Worgan and into the far side of the net.
Danny Kedwell then drew a save from Worgan as he struck the ball goalwards whilst turning before the Stones had a couple of chances which they couldn’t capitalise on. Reason played a short corner to Anderson who crossed to the unmarked Josh Hare who headed over the bar and then Pigott put a free-kick from 25 yards just over after Stuart Lewis was fouled.
