Jay’s Journal

The preparations for tomorrow have gone well. We went through what we needed to do at training yesterday and it’s game we’re all looking forward to. And like I’ve being saying for the last few weeks now, it’ll be good to get that illusive win.

In general, the mood in the dressing room has been OK. The lads are naturally disappointed after games and there’s been a couple of times we’ve had to pick them up a little bit because they’ve been down but I think you can see from the performance on Tuesday night that they’re all in it together and believe we can turn it round.

With the new lads coming in, it always helps and gives everyone a lift. We really need that win to kick us on and we’ve got to get it sooner rather than later obviously.

Squad wise, I’ve still got some things to look at. There were one or two that couldn’t train yesterday, which is disappointing when you’re trying to plan for the Saturday. We’ve got Blair Turgott back available after he couldn’t play against his parent club on Tuesday, so that’s a plus.

There’s different things I can look at. I’ve had a watch of Tranmere this week and will do so again tonight and once we know what players we’ve definitely got available we can make those decisions before the game.

Tranmere, for their standards, had a poor result against Macclesfield on Tuesday. I am sure Micky will be looking for a reaction from his players. Look, they’re a very good side and one of the better sides we’ve played this season. They’ve got bundles of experience, their front two – Cook and Norwood – are a real handful.

They’re a massive club, so it’s one to look forward to. They’ll bring a good crowd down to the Gallagher and it’ll be a great atmosphere.

Most will see the pressure being on them – they need a win to keep themselves in the thick of those play-offs. With regards to us, I am sure no one’s giving us much hope of getting three points with the run we’ve been on but we can take lots of positives from Tuesday night and will go out there and try to get a good result.

When you look at Macclesfield beating Tranmere 4-1 on Tuesday, it’s the same scoreline we beat Macclesfield earlier in the season. At the time, Joe Pigott and Zavon Hines were scoring goals and of late that’s been a problem for us.

I’ve been critical of the defensive side but we’ve signed players to deal with that but replacing goals is always very difficult, especially at this time of the season. I am not putting it solely on that but it does take pressure off you as defenders.
I think there’s been games when we’ve been one-nil up – the likes of Eastleigh at home – if you go on and score two or three, like we did at Macclesfield, it kills the game off. We’ve not been doing that of late and that’s been a big part of recent form.

Confidence is another thing and confidence has been knocked a lot and we need a win to get that belief back into the lads.

Finally for this week, we held a schools tournament here earlier today. I’d like to congratulate Roseacre on their win, they beat a very good Wateringbury side who had a few younger players. It’s my old school Roseacre, so it’s nice for them to get the win and I am sure they’ll do well in the competition.
