M25 collision

Macclesfield match: postponed

Tonight’s game against Macclesfield Town was postponed after a serious crash involving two lorries and a van on the M25.

The resulting delays prevented most of the Stones squad arriving for the game.

With the road still closed at 19:45 and recovery of the vehicles still to take place, the decision was made to postpone following consultation with both clubs and the authorities.

Club chief executive Bill Williams said: “This is the first time in my 50 years in the game that I’ve experienced anything like this happening.

“When we travel to home or away games we always allow plenty of time and, under normal circumstances, all of our players would have been at the ground by 5.45.

“Unfortunately, no one could have envisaged this multi-vehicle crash, which caused a huge spillage and closed the Kent-bound carriageway.

“I can understand everyone’s frustrations and feel for those supporters who travelled from Macclesfield, but as you can appreciate this incident is beyond our control.”

Everyone who paid cash on the turnstiles is asked to retain the dated compliment slip they were given on the turnstiles. Any e-tickets purchased for this game will be valid for the rearranged fixture.

A further announcement about ticketing will be made tomorrow (7 March).

The new date has not been set. The clubs will liaise with the National League.
