The organisers of Maidstone Museum’s upcoming exhibition on the history of Maidstone football are looking for sponsors.
Life-long Stones supporter John Bunyard, who is designing the content, explains: “The idea was to see if we could create a comprehensive history of Maidstone football by blood, sweat and tears alone.
“After two years of effort, we already have a once-in-a lifetime display to put on. But, with the Hazlitt Theatre also building in extra elements that offer fun experiences, there are now some costs to be covered. This opens up an opportunity for commercial sponsors to get involved.”
Classed as a major exhibition, Maidstone – United in Football will run from 14 September 2019 to 18 January 2020.
It traces the story of football in Maidstone from the earliest days up to the present, weaving in much of the social history of the town.
It contains a feast of pictures, documents and memorabilia, some never before displayed in public.
In particular, there are many items from former chairman Jim Thompson’s private collection.
“We’ve had a terrific amount of help and support from all directions: the club, fellow fans, the KM, you name it,” says John. “I’ve received offers to lend exhibits that go back more than a century. The theme of the exhibition is the way that football has worked as a force for bringing Maidstone people together over the decades, so I’m hoping it will prove not only entertaining and educational but good for local pride, too.”
