Bromley KSC

Bromley 1-1 Maidstone United (Stones win 3-2 on penalties)

Tuesday 16 April 2019 // Kent Senior Cup // Attendance: 1,587 // Report courtesy of KentOnline

Maidstone retained the Kent Senior Cup after beating Bromley on penalties.

Chris Lewington saved spot-kicks from Frankie Sutherland and Stones old boys Zavon Hines and George Porter as John Still’s side won the shoot-out 3-2 after a 1-1 draw.

Bromley led at the break through Sutherland’s penalty but Elliott Romain levelled just past the hour mark as the tie went the distance.

The sides played good football in patches but it was a pretty tame first half in the 130th Kent Senior Cup final.

There was little at either end to get fans excited but with both clubs naming strong XIs there was always that hope it would take off.

Bromley were forced into an early change with Omar Bugiel finally admitting defeat after going down for the third time.

His replacement, Marc-Anthony Okoye, got in a good position to score moments after coming on but Dan Wishart did just enough to put him off.

Jordan Higgs missed the target after a neat move involving Sutherland and Richard Brindley around the edge of the Stones box but that was about it for the hosts before taking the lead from the penalty spot.

Aron Davies was the man penalised for a challenge on Higgs just inside the box and Sutherland sent Chris Lewington the wrong way in the 32nd minute.

For the Stones, Romain – who had a 20-yard shot comfortably saved – and Justin Amaluzor were full of running for no reward as Bromley ended the half in front.

Romain battled his way into the box at the start of the second half but didn’t trouble David Gregory and he headed over a couple of minutes later.

Maidstone were pushing and the equaliser arrived in the 61st minute when Ollie Muldoon found substitute Blair Turgott who stood up a cross to the back post.

Will De Havilland’s header missed the target but United kept the ball alive and Romain forced it home.

Turgott worked Gregory from the edge of the area and Michael Phillips had an effort blocked,

Either side of the Phillips chance, Porter failed to make the most of Higgs’ inviting cross and shanked a good opening wide.

Former Maidstone forward Hines, having announced his injury-enforced retirement earlier this season, made a late appearance from the bench for Bromley.

He forced a good save from Lewington after a strong run and Bromley had the ball in the net from the corner but it was ruled out for a foul as the Lillywhites ended the 90 minutes on top.

Jack Richards and Muldoon missed Maidstone’s first two penalties but Romain, Wishart and Turgott were all successful as United lifted the cup for a record 18th time.

Frankie Raymond and Brindley were the successful Bromley takers but Maidstone were celebrating when Lewington denied Porter.
