Vanarama National League game

Maidstone United 2-1 Barnet

Tuesday 9 April 2019 // National League // Attendance: 1,471 (129 Barnet supporters) // Report by Helen Halfyard

The Stones completed their first league double of the season, with a 2-1 win against Barnet.

That outcome seemed unlikely 56 seconds into the game when Medy Elito found space on the edge of the area and fired a shot straight into the top right hand corner.

Minutes later, the Stones had a chance to get back into the game when Jake Cassidy squared a ball for Blair Turgott, who saw his low shot denied by Mark Cousins in the Bees’ goal.

With 21 minutes gone, Jack Powell lined up a free kick from 25-yards out. Following his trademark ‘Jonny Wilkinson’ run-up, his effort went wide of the left-hand post.

The Stones were forced into their first substitution just after the half hour mark, when Simon Walton picked up an injury and Ollie Muldoon came on in his place.

Just before the break, the Stones were awarded a penalty and up stepped Turgott to take the spot kick. Unfortunately, Cousins made the save to deny the Stones captain his 12th goal of the season.

Whatever was said at half time did the trick as Justin Amaluzor levelled early after the break – finding the bottom corner from inside the box.

With the majority of the action in the visitor’s half, the Stones got their reward from a Powell free kick, which Rob Swaine headed home with 20 minutes remaining.

Five minutes later, Amaluzor had the chance to double his tally but his first time shot flashed just wide of Cousins’ post.

Barnet came close to an equaliser with minutes to spare but Simeon Akinola’s effort went wide.

This was a classic game of two halves, with the Stones deserving of only their third home league win of the season.
