League sponsors Vanarama have been digging around as the season reaches the quarter mark.
The way a team starts a season can be a great indication of what could be ahead, but it can also lead you down the garden path.
In the blink of an eye, we’ve already seen a quarter of the Vanarama National League South season fly by – and the table is taking shape.
The Stones currently sit 11th after an up-and-down start to life back in the sixth tier.
But do the first 11 games give us a fair assessment of what the table will look like when it matters? We’ve done some digging to find out.
The indications all point to things looking up at the Gallagher Stadium from now on.
According to how last season unfolded, play-off contenders don’t need to cement their place early – only three of last season’s top seven were there after 11 games and stayed there. Hampton & Richmond, St Albans and Slough Town all fell away after promising early starts.
It’s the same most years as gaps appears and clubs fall away.
Then there’s the craziness of the title race. Torquay United were caught floundering in 13th place before Gary Johnson came in and turned their season around.
That’s after Billericay Town threw down the gauntlet to the other teams in the division. Leading the way after 11 games, they look a sure bet to back up their owner’s pre-season prediction of them being champions. Ultimately however they dropped out of the reckoning and out of the play-offs.
You’d be a brave person to predict what is coming up!.
