Maidstone fan Rory Fenlon offers league sponsors Vanarama a personal take on goings on at the Gallagher Stadium as the year comes to a close
So we are getting close to the half-way stage already – sum up the season so far in your own words.
Football is not an exact science, so calling things at this stage can be somewhat demanding. My gut feeling is that the club is where I thought it would be, reasonably well placed but probably not in contention to win the division outright.
Looking into the future, what does 2020 hold for the club?
It’s an interesting time which much talk of outside investment. We’ve got a fabulous club and it could really go places with a few more people involved at the top.
If you can wrap up one Christmas gift for your manager, what would it be?
The gift of some consistency. I can’t remember the last time we put two league wins together. We’re not a bad side, but we do need to be more regular with our good performances. It will come.
If it can’t be Maidstone come April, pick your National League South title winner
It has to be Wealdstone purely because they have a fantastic advantage and they are very strong at home but I wouldn’t rule out Slough Town.
The busy Christmas and New Year calendar – love it or hate it?
It’s a staple of football in this country and always will be. Who wants to be at home on Boxing Day and in between Christmas and New Year? Not me.
What’s your high point of 2019?
Beating Torquay in the FA Cup. We’re getting used to some fine upsets. I also enjoyed us putting four past Chelmsford City in the first few weeks of the season.
Your most memorable away day so far this season?
Blackpool, regardless of the end result. We did well for so long and it was great to spend the weekend by the seaside with a few like-minded fellow Stones.
When did you first start following the club?
I’ve been attending games since the 80s but I also try and get behind a few of Kent’s Non-League teams. I’ve been to 40 games already this season.
What makes the club so special to you?
The people. You get a warm welcome from the gateman to the programme sellers. You feel like you money matters to the club and makes all the difference. Unlike going to a Premier League game where you are purely a customer.
League sponsors Vanarama have recently launched the National League Club Reward scheme to help fans back their club’s budget. Every time a fan takes out a brand new van lease with Vanarama or a brand new car lease with Motorama their club will earn £100 and you will receive £30 cashback!
