St Albans City 1-0 Maidstone United

St Albans City 1-0 Maidstone United   // National League South // Attendance: 683// Match report by Ruth Tunnell // Saturday 18 January 2020

Maidstone United were beaten for the first time in five matches as an own goal from Ross Marshall was enough to separate the two sides in a game where neither keeper had much to do.

Chances were at a premium in the first half although the Stones probably enjoyed the majority of possession. With just three minutes gone, Justin Amaluzor ran into space down the right and pulled the ball back into the box where there were three Maidstone players arriving but it evaded all of them.

Dan Wishart then had a free-kick from outside the box go high and wide and at the other end, Tom Bender’s free-kick that was from a similar distance out didn’t miss by as much. It wasn’t until 35th minute though that either side went close as Jefferson Louie side footed the ball wide from a good position but his effort wouldn’t have counted anyway as the referee assistant had spotted an infringement.

Then two minutes before the break, Louie knocked the ball down inside the box. When the ball bounced back up again, Joe Iaciofano acrobatically struck an overhead kick and the ball flew over the bar.

The first save of the game finally came on 55 minutes. Maidstone strung together a neat move which started with Amaluzor who found Saidou Khan. Khan played a one-two with Ibby Akanbi before getting a shot away which Dean Snedker turned wide.

Then six minutes later, the home side took the lead. Amaluzor was tackled just inside the St Albans half and the Saints broke quickly. Substitute Rodhell Gordon, who was making his debut for St Albans, drove the ball into the box where the unfortunate Ross Marshall stuck out a foot and accidentally diverted the cross into the net.

The Stones never really created anything of note after this and with four minutes remaining, St Albans should have made sure of the points. The ball fell to substitute Solomon Nwabuokei who was inside the box and he desperately tried to get a clean shot away but at the final attempt, he was thwarted by Chris Lewington.
