It has been a good week results wise for Maidstone United. After they gained a point away at Ebbsfleet United, the Stones travelled to Barnet where they picked up their first league win since a victory over Aldershot in late September.
Whilst the home side had the majority of possession early on, the Stones did create the occasional opportunity on the break. With 11 minutes gone, Jack Paxman did well to nick the ball off Charlee Adams and he ran into the area but Paxman was under pressure and his weak effort went straight at Mark Cousins in the Barnet goal.
At the other end, Cheyen Alexander cut inside George McLennan who slid in but he failed to stop Alexander creating room for a shot. The ball looked to be heading inside the right post but Grant Smith, who would have seen the ball late, did very well to get across and push it away.
And with 28 minutes gone, the Stones took the lead. Michael Phillips played the ball up to the half way line to Jake Cassidy who controlled the ball with his chest before turning and slipping an excellent pass into Blair Turgott. Turgott still had much to do as he entered the box and he managed to squeeze the ball past Cousins to register his 11th league goal of the season.
Going in front gave Maidstone confidence and they finished the half the stronger of the two sides. They also went close to doubling their lead when Turgott curled the ball towards the top right hand corner of the net from the edge of the box but Cousins made a fine save to claw the ball behind. Then moments later, Elliott Romain carved out the space for a fierce drive but once again Cousins made the stop.
There was nothing in the way of serious goalmouth action in the second half until the 74th minute. Michael Phillips won the ball in his half and played a short pass to Simon Walton who spotted the run of Turgott. Turgott carried the ball forward and then unselfishly gave it to Gold Omotayo who with his first touch, found the feet of Cousins.
Shortly after this, Barnet went close. Cheye Alexander let fly from outside the box and the ball went inches wide of the right post.
Then on 80 minutes, Omotayo made amends for his earlier miss. The Stones kept the ball well before Cassidy drove into the box and from a tight angle he got a shot away which Cousins could only parry and Omotayo tapped in the rebound from close range to seal the win for Maidstone.
