Maidstone United 1-1 Slough Town // National League South // Attendance: 1,815 (96 Slough Town Supporters) // Saturday 17 August 2019
It is now three games unbeaten for the Stones after another draw at the Gallagher Stadium. After going behind in this match, Maidstone enjoyed a greater share of possession in the second half and they put Slough under a lot of pressure late on in this game but a combination of good defending and goalkeeping from the visitors saw this match end level.
The Stones looked sluggish in the early stages of this match and it took some time for them to get going. During this spell, Slough looked the more likely side to score and with just seven minutes gone, they tested Jake Cole. George Wells whipped the ball into the box and Scott Davies’ header drew a full length save from Cole.
Then with 20 minutes gone, the Rebels did take the lead. Matt Lench received the ball about 20 yards out and his shot caught Cole off guard as it looped over the Maidstone keeper and into the net.
Justin Amaluzor, returning from injury, was replaced by Dan Wishart as Maidstone started to work their way into the match. Matt McClure forced Jack Turner into a low save before the Stones’ debutant brought Maidstone level on 37 minutes. A long ball forward from George Elokobi might have been cut out by Turner but McClure nipped in to take it past the Slough keeper before finishing nicely from wide and a challenging angle.
Maidstone tried to pressurise Slough in the early stages of the second half and the Rebels were unable to clear a Stones throw five minutes after the restart. The ball dropped to Sam Corne and his effort from just inside the box flashed inches wide of the far post.
There was then nothing to note until 12 minutes from time when Maidstone notably stepped up the tempo. This started when a free-kick from Noah Chesmain was heading in until Turner intervened with a diving save. The ball was quickly recycled and it looked as though substitute Ibby Akanbi was being held as he desperately tried to reach the ball and he got a shot away which Guy Hollis blocked.
The Stones kept pushing and from a Corne corner, the ball dropped to Ryan Johnson. Johnson spun and got a shot away which substitute Ryan Bird got off the line. Then shortly after this, substitute Iffy Allen’s cross was only cleared back out to Allen and he tried to place the ball inside the right post only for Turner to stick out a leg and get the ball away from close to the line.
With the game in stoppage time, Corne went close to clinching all three points for the Stones. He received the ball from Allen and his resultant effort was similar to the one earlier in the half and it went just past the far post.
