Saturday 10 November 2018 // FA Cup First Round // Attendance: 2169 (60 Macclesfield Town supporters) // Report by Ruth Tunnell

For the first time this season, Maidstone United came from behind to win and at the same time, dumped Macclesfield Town out of the FA Cup.

The Silkmen won the National League in 2017 / 2018 but arrived at the Gallagher Stadium rooted to the bottom of League Two with just one victory this season. Whilst they looked comfortable in a poor first half, they couldn’t cope with Maidstone resurgence after the break and the Stones held on for a comfortable win.

The first half was completely lacking in interest apart from the fact that Macclesfield took the lead on 14 minutes. An aimless forward ball from Simon Walton was easily cut out and worked quickly forward. Walton was left to try and deal with Malachi Napa but he was unable to stop him squaring the ball into the middle where Ben Stephens was on hand to smash the ball into the net from close range.

The start of the second half was a complete contrast to the first half and within six minutes Maidstone were level. Walton was fouled deep in the Macclesfield half and a few yards in from the left hand touchline. Most in the ground would have been expecting Jack Powell to cross but he elected for a shot and he curled the ball in off the right post.

Seconds later, the Stones came within inches of going in front. Jack Paxman’s corner was met by Walton who thought his glancing header which had come off the post had crossed the line. Play immediately swung to the other end and the ball came into Stephens who saw his first header saved by Grant Smith and Smith managed to recover in time to deny Stephens from the rebound.

Maidstone then had the ball in the next but keeper Kieran O’Hara was fouled in the process and the protests from the home crowd were just dying down when Elliott Romain was nudged in the back inside the box by Jamie Grimes. The referee, Neil Hair, did not hesitate in pointing to the spot and Blair Turgott managed to squeeze the penalty under O’Hara who had dived the right way.

The game then tightened back up again but the Stones went close again with two minutes remaining. A short corner went to Romain who found Turgott and he cut inside before sending the ball inches over the bar.
