The Kent League table finally makes more comfortable
viewing for the Stones faithful after victory over Greenwich
lifted United five places to 8th spot.
Manager Lloyd Hume was pleased with his side’s
third consecutive victory. He said: " I’m
delighted with the performance, the effort the lads
put in and their determination. I’ve said in the
past that we’ve carried people but we didn’t
have to today. There were average performances but everyone
did their job and three or four people really shone.
For me the outstanding player was Neil Miller. He hasn’t
been around for a while but he has worked on his fitness.
Alan and I said at the start of the season that you’ll
see him come through and get fit and what a great acquisition
he is for us."
The first half was truly dire but the Stones enjoyed
the majority of the possession and their work rate was
excellent as they constantly harried Greenwich, often
forcing the home side into unnecessary mistakes. It
was Borough however, who had the best opportunities
but Steve Williams managed to get a hand to Peter Garland’s
shot and Ben Rayner drove Danny Hunt’s cross narrowly
wide.
The Stones started the second half brightly and Sam
Tydeman saw his effort held before some excellent battling
play from Jimmy Strouts turned the game in the visitors
favour. Just like at Tunbridge Wells before Christmas,
the Maidstone captain’s fierce resolve saw him
win the ball in midfield before he calmly drifted past
a defender and shot low past Michael Holder in the Greenwich
goal.
Borough had an excellent chance to equalise with 78
minutes gone but Hunt couldn’t connect properly
as the ball bounced into the area and Williams managed
to get a leg in the way to block the shot.
Then just two minutes later, an excellent Stones move
saw substitute Nick Barnes pick out Strouts in the area.
He turned the defender before blasting the ball towards
the goal but Steve McKenzie appeared to handle the shot
and Mr Kelly awarded the penalty. Jimmy Strouts smashed
the ball past Holder to seal another important victory
for the Stones.
