Stones 8th and final pre-season
game of the new campaign saw a good win at Mill Field,
the home of Southern League Eastern Division side Aveley.
Despite being without the services of goalkeeper Pat
Mullin (family commitment), Nathan Paul (illness), Jimmy
Strouts (work) and Nick Hegley (calf injury), the remaining
squad members were more than capable of dealing with
the opposition on the day.
The first half was the epitome of
an uninspiring pre-season game. Despite the green surface,
the pitch was very hard and both sides seemed to lack
any edge in the opening exchanges. The first incident
of note saw player-manager Lloyd Hume hobble off with
a recurrence of his calf muscle injury. This now makes
him extremely doubtful for the opening league fixture
at Deal Town next Saturday.
The deadlock was broken by Takaloo on 26 minutes. Sam
Tydeman slotted a through ball for the tricky striker
to latch onto. Takaloo shot early from just inside the
box and his low bobbly effort somehow avoided the dive
of keeper Marc Palmer and nestled into the corner of
the net.
The second half was a far more competitive affair and
Aveley levelled the score just four minutes after the
break. Keith Martin headed in powerfully from 8 yards
when he found himself totally unmarked at a free kick.
The parity only lasted eight minutes though as Rowland
headed home a fine Kimble cross for the winning goal.
