The Stones suffered their first
defeat of the season against Folkestone as the Ryman
Premier League side emphasised the gulf between the
divisions. Maidstone certainly didnt give a bad
account of themselves, especially in the first thirty
minutes, but Folkestone took full advantage of the chances
that fell their way to ease to a comfortable victory.
There was little goalmouth action in the first half
but Jimmy Strouts headed over the Stones best opportunity
and Nick Hegley had a good shout for a penalty waved
away after he was bundled over in the box.
Meanwhile, Folkestone suddenly found themselves 2-0
in front when two defensive errors inside seven minutes
gave the home side the advantage. The first goal came
as Jimmy Strouts and Neil Miller failed to dispossess
Mike Everitt allowing him time to square the ball to
Paul Jones who fired in a low finish from the edge of
the area. Then a complete mix-up at the back saw Jones
react quickly to grab his second of the night from 40
yards.
But the goal of the night, and potentially one of the
best that Stones fans will see this season, came courtesy
of Nick Hegley just after the break. He received the
ball close to the edge of the area and some how created
sufficient space to float a superb curling shot into
the far corner of the net and leave Tony Kessell stranded.
This was as good as it got for Maidstone and Folkestone
added a third shortly after when substitute Ben Sly
sent a neat flick past Pat Mullin.
Lyndon Rowland then saw his shot hit James Everett
on the line and sail over the bar and Stuart Myall had
a chance to add a fourth for Folkestone but there was
little else in the way of significant action as the
game petered to a conclusion.
