One good pre-season performance
certainly doesnt mean that the subsequent season
will be a successful one but after the Stones out-played
Tilbury in their first pre-season outing there is hope
that the coming year will be a fruitful one.
Indeed, Alan Walker was so delighted
with his sides showing that it lead him to declare:
Arguably thats the best first game pre-season
performance at any football club that Ive been
involved in.
The addition of some new signings and trialists to
the Stones squad injected some much needed energy and
pace into the side and Walker was pleased with the way
the team knitted together saying: Im absolutely
delighted with the performance. In the first half, and
in a lot of patches in the second half, we played some
great football and we deservedly won the game. We know
all about the lads weve already got here but it
was good too see the performances by the new boys. Weve
got the makings of a very good squad.
One of those who particularly impressed was Nick Hegley
who set up the first goal of the evening, lifting the
ball up for Simon Austin to score with his head with
only three minutes gone.
Tilburys only decent chance of the evening came
shortly after when Gary Hemens allowed the Dockers in
but with the goal gapping, the ball was blazed over
the bar.
With the Stones dominating the game, the second goal
duly arrived when Gary Kimbles corner was headed
in by the impressive Mario Celaire.
Lloyd Hume and Alan Walker changed the side around
at half time and United grabbed a deserved third goal
twelve minutes before time. Trialist Tyrone Jones showed
great determination to keep the ball in the box and
roll it into the path of the on-rushing Lee Sperring
who lashed it past the keeper to seal a satisfactory
night for the Stones.
