This result was definitely two
points lost for the Stones as they blew a host of chances
and threw away a comfortable 2-0 lead at the Reachfields
Stadium.
Although it could have been a lot worse for the visitors
had Hythe been awarded a penalty in the last minute
when Gary Kimble clearly handled Roy Godden's shot.
After the heights of Saturdays win the result left
Alan Walker feeling: " Very, very disappointed.
People were trying to win the game on their own and
as a team generally, we suddenly thought we were better
than we were and that allowed them to get the impetus.
I thought we were poor at being professional and I think
Hythe Town will feel unlucky not to have got all three
points."
Initially, the Stones showed no after effects of their
long trip to Winchester and they took an early lead
when Nick Hegley created room on the edge of the box
before firing low past Steve Chivers.
Pat Mullin was called into action when both Dean Widnall
and Ian Hayes managed to get a sight of goal and Mario
Celaire had to make a last gasp tackle to prevent Roy
Godden from scoring.
But that apart, the Stones looked in control and Ryan
Royston added a second when he drifted pass the Hythe
defence to head in Gary Kimble's free-kick.
However, early in the second half Hythe were handed
a lifeline when Lee Blackman was hauled over in the
box and Jason Brazier sent Mullin the wrong way.
And with the Stones suddenly struggling to retain the
ball, Roy Godden managed to shoot from an acute angle
but Luke Anderson and Ryan Royston combined to clear
the ball off the line.
Mo Takaloo was replaced by Simon Austin and the substitute
should have made the best possible impact when he got
on the end of Royston's deep cross but his shot just
cleared the bar.
And Austin saw another good opportunity go over again
on 75 minutes after he had combined well with fellow
substitute Lee Sperring.
Then with just 7 minutes remaining and with the Stones
tiring fast, Hythe grabbed the equaliser when Godden
headed in Lee Winfield's cross.
