Maidstone United secured their position at the top of the Kent League Cup Group C table with a comfortable victory away at VCD Athletic.

Few Stones fans braved the freezing conditions at Harrow Meadow but those that did were treated to two good goals and the sight of Pat Mullin making a brief appearance as a centre forward.

United enjoyed the best of the first half and VCD survived a strong penalty appeal with just 10 minutes played when Lee Sperring was barged over in the box by Terry Murphy.

Sperring soon found himself on the score sheet 4 minutes later though when he turned and hit a terrific shot past Grant Wallis from the edge of the area.

And Mo Takaloo added a second shortly after with an equally good finish with 23 minutes gone.

Debutant Scott Lindsey and Simon Austin then both missed from close range before Martin Discroll, an early substitute for Ricky Bennett, had shot strike the post.

VCD then replaced Stuart Abbott with Alan Owen and the substitute was almost immediately involved as with 56 minutes gone he found himself with only Richard Mannerings to beat but his shot went across the face of goal and struck the far post.

At the other end, Simon Austin was inches away from connecting with Nick Hegley's pull back and Hegley himself then went close, lifting the ball over the bar at the end of a good Stones move.

Martin Driscoll then hit the post again with 14 minutes remaining but the final chance fell to Lee Sperring who unfortunately hit his shot straight at Grant Wallis who managed to parry his effort.

Tonight's win means that we now play Beckenham Town at home in the quarter-finals on 11th February KO 3pm.
