The Stones continued their excellent
start to the season with a comfortable victory against
a Slade Green side who offered very little in the way
of attacking threat.
In fact, with the exception of an Anthony Weir shot,
which he scuffed wide shortly before half time, Slade
Green didnt even come close to scoring until 90
minutes were played. Danny Little then saw his header
just pass the post and Weir should have hit the target
with a side-footed shot but he put the chance over the
bar.
By then though, the three points belonged to the Stones
and they were so dominant that they really should have
scored more than two goals. But after the game Lloyd
Hume said: I dont think it was the best
of performances but they didnt offer much up against
us and its hard to get yourselves more motivated
as the game goes on when it looked as if it was an end
of season game where they had nothing for it. Once we
knew we were in front we went at it at a canter but
Im just pleased with the result.
Mario Celaire and Nathan Paul were particularly outstanding
for the Stones and Celaire was instrumental in a good
move with 10 minute played which ended with Lyndon Rowland
putting the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out.
Rowland had two further opportunities to score but
he managed to blast the ball over the from just 6 yards
out and then he crashed his shot against the bar after
an excellent run and low ball into the box from Nick
Hegley.
The breakthrough finally came on 24 minutes though
when goal keeper Paul Vines could only palm Garry Kimble's
corner as far as Celaire who headed in his first competitive
Stones goal.
Jimmy Strouts then saw his low drive cleared off the
line following a Kimble corner but he got his third
goal of the season when Hegley hit a shot from Kimbles
free-kick into the ground and as it bounced up Strouts
swiveled and smacked a left foot volley straight past
Vines.
But Vines prevented Slade Green falling further behind
with two good saves inside a minute. Nathan Paul set
up Nick Hegley but the Slade Green keeper did very well
to just tip his shot round the post and then Hegley
got on the end of Kimbles corner but Vines saved
his effort again.
The Stones brought on both Simon Austin and Lee Sperring
with time running out and another good Celaire run nearly
brought about a third goal but Sperrings shot
went all the way across the face of goal and agonisingly
wide.
