| Maidstone
United finally obtained maxium points in the league
for the first time in five games with a tense win over
Ashford Town.
The Stones couldnt have got off to a worst start though
for with only two minutes gone, Ashford took the lead
with a Luke Coleman strike.
However, it did not take long for Maidstone to equalise.
With 12 minutes played Simon Austin drilled in a deep
cross which was only partially cleared and Jim Strouts
played the ball back to Lynden Rowland who headed in
from 6 yards.
The rest of the half was a rather disjointed affair
with Ashford's Gary Clarke and Jim Strouts forced to
leave the pitch through injury. The Stones did have
the best opportunities though and with the game in first
half injury time, Simon Austin had a shot cleared off
the line and a Mario McNish header was deflected narrowly
wide.
Austin came close again early in the second half when
he forced Overland to palm over his shot from the edge
of the area before he he successfully converted a penalty
in the 59th minute when McNish was felled in the box.
Then with 6 minutes remaining it looked as if the Stones
had made the game safe when Aaron Lacy's deep corner
was headed back across goal by Ryan Royston and Errison
Ahwan tapped the ball over the line.
However, the Maidstone faithful were forced to enduer
a nervy end to the game as Ashford frequently got in
behind the defence down the left hand side. On two occassions
Joby Thorogood had a chance to score but he put his
shots wide of the far post. Bizarrely though, the referee
thought one of these efforts had touched Mullin's hand
and awarded a corner from which George Femwick scored
to set up an anxious last few moments for The Stones.
