THE POST MATCH INTERVIEW

Lloyd Hume (1.5Mb)

The Stones got their pre-season campaign off to a gentle start with a 0-0 draw at Hythe Town.

This was a game of few chances with the home side enjoying the better opportunities but Hythe’s keeper Nick Day, who had replaced Pat Mullin midway through the first half, kept his team mates at bay with a good performance. Mullin was forced off the pitch by an ankle injury and as Richard Mannerings is currently on trial with Gillingham, Hythe lent The Stones Nick Day as a replacement keeper.

Maidstone gave debuts to Kane Rice from Cambridge United and the former Beckenham duo Tony Sinclair and Errison Ahwan. And Rice was instrumental in a move on 16 minutes, which saw him sweep a good crossfield ball out to Simon Austin who beat the defender, but his drive was pushed away from the near post.

The second half saw the introduction of Andy Hart, Aaron Lacy and Lee Sperring and Lacy and Hart combined well with 3 minutes left only for Lacy’s resultant effort to just clear the bar. Then with the final whistle immanent, Ahwan nearly made his debut a memorable occasion but his shot from a Lacy corner went the wrong side of the post.

Speaking after the game Lloyd Hume said: “I think some of our defending was pretty sloppy and some of our attacking play lacked a bit of creativeness but its not about results at the moment. I thought Kane Rice had a good game and he’s a young lad who is neat on the ball. I also think Tony (Sinclair) did well but Errison (Ahwan) is a lot better than he showed today. I think he was trying too hard to impress people and he doesn’t need to do that, he is a good player and we will see a lot better from him.”
