Maidstone United
notched up their second pre-season win of their campaign
thanks largely to a solid second half performance and
a Jimmy Strouts screamer.
The Stones were below par in the opening 45 minutes
but they still managed to create three good chances
inside three minutes mid-way through the half. On 19
minutes, Lee Sperring’s persistence in chasing
down two Erith defenders paid off as he regained possession,
cut inside and riffled a shot just wide.
Nick
Hegley was then chopped down on the edge of the box
and The Deres keeper Ashley Jones did well to claw Mo
Takaloo’s curling free-kick away from the top
left hand corner of the net. And Jones came to the rescue
for Erith once again just seconds later when he managed
to touch Simon Austin’s shot wide after the Stones
forward had latched onto a Sam Tydeman pass.
However, despite these efforts it was the home side
that went in front after 31 minutes. Austin Berkley
beat Jason Barton in the box before pulling the ball
back to Michael Scowden .Scowden’s shot was heading
goalbound past temporary keeper Paul Holland (pictured
left ) but was stopped by the outstretched arm of Aaron
Lacy and Tommy Martin converted the resultant penalty.
The Deres should have doubled their lead with 52 minutes
gone when Vinnie Durrant found Berkley out wide and
he swung a good cross into the unmarked Anton Smith
but Smith side-footed the chance wide.
Then with the match meandering towards its conclusion,
Jimmy Strouts brought the game to life with a terrific
goal. The Stones captain picked the ball up 40 yards
from goal, beat an Erith defender and lashed an unstoppable
half volley into the far right hand corner of the net.
There after The Stones seemed the much stronger of
the two sides and the winner duly arrived 7 minutes
from time. Nick Hegley’s cross was headed up in
the air by the under pressure Lynden Rowland and when
the ball fell to Andy Hart he cleverly headed the ball
back across goal for Leroy Huggins to nod in his first
goal of the season.
