The difference in the quality
of performance between Saturday's victory over County
League side Bly Spartans and Monday evening's win at
Ryman Premier League opposition Folkestone was almost
immeasurable. Whereas on Saturday, The Stones snatched
a 1-0 win courtesy of a 90th minute header friom Mario
McNish, Monday night's win was one full of verve, pace
and endeavour.
The evening did not get off to a good start, when after
only 78 seconds Folkestone took the lead. Michael Everitt
unleashed a 25 yard strike at goal and Chuck Martini
could only stand flat footed as the ball flashed into
the net. This was certainly an inauspicious start for
the visitors.
Within 11 minutes, the scores were level, when a reinvigorated
Mo Takaloo controlled a Nick Hegley cross in the box.
In trademark style, he swivelled and hit a shot high
over Tony Kessell and into the back of the Folkestone
net. Just two minutes later, a dreadful piece of miscontrol
by Mark Saunders allowed Hegley through on goal and
he coolly slotted the ball past Kessell to give Maidstone
the lead.
Both sides almost scored just a minute before the break.
Firstly, Takaloo received a cross from Hegley but his
shot on the turn was well saved. Folkestone counter
attacked immediately and Walid Matata nudged ahead of
Errison Ahwan and fired a shot from the edge of the
box only to see Martini turn his effort around the post.
Maidstone had by far the better of the second half and
Lynden Rowland almost made it 3-1 when his touch to
Jimmy Strouts' forceful run flashed across the Folkestone
goal. A Kane Rice free kick was then only half cleared
to Strouts and he teed up Simon Austin who smashed a
25 yard effort against the crossbar.
The third goal finally arrived with just 13 minutes
remaining. Martini picked out Hegley with a long clearance
and a combination of pace and a good bounce saw the
former Folkestone man skillfully lob the ball over Kessell
from 20 yards out.
Six minutes later, an appalling defensive mix up between
Kessell and his centre back saw Strouts able to walk
the ball into an open net to give Maidstone a 4-1 lead.
Maidstone continued to attack and Hegley went on a mesmerising
run into the Invicta box but as he was about to shoot
he had his feet taken away. Hegley got to his feet to
take the resultant penalty but his shot struck the base
of the right hand post as Kessell dived to the left.
