Watching Maidstone United play
at the moment is far from an enjoyable pastime for The
Stones are stuck in a poor run of form and are struggling
to turn their fortunes around.
Just like in recent weeks, the performance against
Molesey lacked any impetus and Maidstone didnt
ever really look like scoring, despite the fact that
the visitors were not the strongest side to face The
Stones this season.
After the defeat against Dartford, Lloyd Hume and Alan
Walker made changes to the line-up and formation with
Lee Shearer and Ryan Royston coming into the side at
the back and Mario McNish being pushed into a more advanced
role.
Unfortunately,
although The Stones looked tighter defensively, they
were still very disappointing going forwards. However,
with 15 minutes played Kane Rice gave Chuck Martini
a scare in goal when his free-kick from 25 yards took
a nasty bounce just in front of the Molesey keeper and
he had to push the ball over the bar.
Molesey should have taken the lead 4 minutes later
though when Maidstone failed to clear their lines following
a throw-in and the ball fell to Leroy Phillips. Phillips
managed to stab the ball to Yousseff Metwali who was
just 6 yards out but his weak shot was comfortably saved
by Pat Mullin.
Nick Barnes saw a long range effort just clear the
right hand post before Molesey took the lead on 27 minutes.
Lee Richardson latched onto the ball 25 yards from goal
and hit an excellent rising drive which clipped the
right hand post. When the ball bounced back into the
box, Moleseys Chris White was the first to react
and he slotted the ball past Mullin.
The second half was an equally dire affair with the
Molesey side desperate to waste time at every opportunity
which eventually led to 11 minutes of stoppage time
being played.
Still, Maidstone only threatened to score on two occasions.
The first arose on 63 minutes when a good ball from
Ryan Royston was held up by Simon Austin. Austin then
span away from his marker to loft a chip goalwards that
beat Martini but struck the outside of the post. Then
10 minutes later, Martini made a meal out of a tame
shot from Ray Powell but despite substitute Leroy Huggins
efforts the ball was scrambled clear.
