After a difficult start to
life in the Ryman Premier League, matters are rapidly
beginning to improve for The Stones after they recorded
their second win in a row to move out of the relegation
zone.
A quick glance at the form table before this game showed
that Boreham Wood would probably provide a stern test
for Maidstone as the visitors had recorded five wins
in a row but as it transpired, The Stones throughily
deserved their win.
There was little to choose between the two sides in
the first half and it took until the 26th minute for
the first attempt on goal when Andy Martin's header
was comfortably held by Noel Imber in the Boreham Wood
goal.
However, the visitors took the lead with their first
meaningful attack on 27 minutes when Ray Freeman could
only weakly head the ball clear and when the cross was
whipped back in, Byron Harrison comfortably buried the
chance.
It didn't take long for The Stones to equalise though
as on 32 minutes Andy Martin split the Boreham defence
with a delightful ball and Lynden Rowland slotted a
neat finish past Imber.
The visitors then came close to regaining the lead
shortly after half time when Mario McNishs's clearance
swirled backwards in the wind and when Simon Thomas
collected the ball he shot just over the bar.
On 57 minutes an excellent run from Nick Hegley saw
The Stones' winger release Rowland but unfortunately
Rowland's shot thudded against the advertising hoardings
behind the goal.
As so often this season, Maidstone were then made to
pay for this miss as Boreham Wood then regained the
lead following a corner which was scrambled in by Byron Harrison.
Yet within two minutes of falling behind, The Stones
were level once again as Imber inexplicably dropped
a curling free-kick from Martin and Errison Ahwan bundled
the ball over the line.
Shortly after this Rowland had a goal disallowed for
offside but Maidstone were to have more luck on 76 minutes
when Cumbers once more struck the winning goal when
he finished from close range.
