| Stones interest in
this seasons FA Cup came to an end at New Lodge
as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against Billericay Town.
Supporters were left feeling disappointed at not just
the final result but at the seemingly passionless performance
turned in by the team. It would be fair to say that only
goalkeeper Pat Mullin emerged with any credit from this
game. He made some great saves, notably a brilliant 36th
minute full length diving stop to deny Leon Hunter from
15 yards.
The first half saw no goal threat whatsoever from the
visitors, however, Town only just managed to capitalize
on this situation despite having numerous first half
chances and the lions share of possession.
The only goal of the half was scored in the 38th minute
and came as a result of a mistake in midfield. Rob Owen
misdirected a header just on halfway and Town swiftly
moved forward. The ball found its way to dangerous
striker Joe Flack and he was afforded too much time
and space inside the area. He was allowed to turn and
fire home past Mullin from 12 yards out.
Aaron Lacy replaced a laboured looking Errison Ahwan
at half time in an attempt to try and liven up The Stones
midfield. Initially there seemed to be an improvement
as an Andy Martin corner was headed towards goal with
power by James Peacock.
Jack Buckfield saved well in the Billericay goal, thus
denying Peacock (who was making his first start for
the club) a debut goal. Almost immediately a shot from
the edge of the box by Lee Shearer was saved low down
by Buckfield.
At 1-0 down, United were always in with a chance of
a comeback but the decisive goal came with just 11 minutes
of the game remaining. Flack had a shot blocked by Mario
McNish at close quarters but the Town striker made an
instantaneous reaction to drill the loose ball low past
Mullins left hand.
This goal effectively killed off any potential Stones
comeback and thus it will be Billericay Town who feature
in Mondays FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round draw.
