| Another
game, another disappointing defeat for The Stones. For
the third time this season, United shipped four goals
without reply and they have now collected just three
points out of a possible eighteen and have conceeded
eighteen goals in the process.
The Stones couldn't have wished for a worse start as
on seven minutes Stefan Ball drilled a free kick in
from twenty yards.
However, within six minutes Maidstone came close to
equalising when Ben Lewis' cross was headed against
the base of the post by Mo Takaloo.
Then on thirty six minutes, the home side doubled their
lead when Ashley Burton sent in a deep cross and Shawn
Welford's header crashed in off the inside of the left
hand post.
Events on the pitch then turned from bad to worse for
The Stones three minutes before half time. A quick break
from Ramsgate saw Stefan Ball carry the ball forward
and his long range effort was pushed round the post
by Pat Mullin. Ball then fell to the ground after his
shot and the referee felt that Ben Lewis had made contact
with the Rams striker and dismissed Lewis.
The Stones emerged from the break in determined spirits
though and within a minute of the restart they should
have pulled a goal back. Ray Freeman caused havoc in
the Ramsgate defence and passed to Nick Hegley and his
cross was headed wide by Craig Wilkins.
Then on fifty four minutes Errison Awhan stuck his
arm in the way of a Simon Pettit long throw and Welford
converted the resultant penalty.
Stefan Ball drew a good save from Mullin on fifty nine
minutes but Mullin could do nothing to prevent Ramsgate
from adding a fourth goal in the seventy second minute.
Welford picked up a loose ball in The Stones' half and
sprayed it out to Ball who raced down the left and crossed
for Welford to head in for his hat-trick.
Warren Schulz then had an opportunity to add to Maidstone's
woes with six minutes remaining but Mullin made a excellent
save to tip his shot over the bar.
