The Stones Report

AFC Hornchurch 0-0 Maidstone United

Saturday 29th November 2008
Ryman Premier Division
Attendance: 414
Reporter: Ruth Tunnell

The Stones' long run without a win continues after they drew for the third successive game. Just like in so many recent matches, it was United who had the better chances to snatch the victory and in fact, Andy Walker did not make a single save but even when it looked like Maidstone might score, they found Jason Willis in the Hornchurch goal in fine form.

Neither side managed a shot on target in a dire first half but the game improved after the break and on 47 minutes a corner from Andy Tomlinson picked out Jim McFarlane and from a good position the Hornchurch captain headed over.

Sixty seconds later, Elliot Bradbrook got on the end of a deep free-kick from Ashley Ulph only to head wide before James Pinnock had the first effort on target of the game on 49 minutes when Jason Willis in the Hornchurch goal comfortably held his header.

Eight minutes later, the ball bobbled around in The Urchins' area and it finally dropped to Pinnock who lashed his rising volley straight at Willis. Then just seconds later, Meshach Nugent's fierce shot on the turn flew wide.

By now, The Stones were beginning to dominate and they had a glorious chance to take the lead 11 minutes from time when Bradbrook swung in a corner from the right and the ball struck Peter Hawkins' standing leg just as it looked as though the outstanding defender was going to side foot the ball into the net.

Then three minutes later, Pinnock sent over a corner from the left which was met by Hawkins and his well directed header looked destined for the inside of the right hand post until Willis intervened with an excellent save to claw the ball wide.
