Maidstone United’s fringe players once again gave a good account of themselves as this time they dispatched Margate from the Kent Senior Cup.
There was little to entertain the sparse crowd in the first half and The Stones only had two meaningful attempts on goal. The first came with 25 minutes played when Meshach Nugent twisted and turned into space on the right hand side of the box but from an acute angle he shot over. Then one minute before the break, Keelan Mooney’s shot through a crowd of players was comfortably held by former Maidstone player Pat Mullin in the Margate goal.
In between, on 38 minutes the ball fell to Wayne Wilson who was 25 yards from goal and he sent an excellent half volley flying over Steve Northwood into the net.
After the break Maidstone began to up the tempo and on 58 minutes they drew level when James Peacock clipped the ball into Lloyd Blackman who used his chest to take the ball away from the defender before thumping a fine finish past the stranded Mullin.
Mullin then kept the scores level five minutes later when he made a good save to deny Nugent before at the other end, Northwood had to be alert to tip Dan Young’s header over the bar.
On 69 minutes, Ant Bodle replaced Jay Saunders and Bodle made an immediate impact when with 74 minutes played he scored his first senior goal for the club with a neat finish low into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Sixty seconds later, Mo Takaloo came close to equalising when Northwood could not palm the ball clear and then on 80 minutes, the Maidstone keeper had to make a save low to his right to deny Aaron Quain before Blackman had an opportunity to extend The Stones’ lead two minutes later but he shot wide of the right hand post.
With the game approaching full time, Northwood then spared the crowd another thirty minutes of enduring the freezing conditions when he made a cracking save by flinging himself to his right to turn substitute Dan Stubbs’ shot wide.
