Maidstone United’s excellent away form continues after a narrow win over Boreham Wood. Including the matches towards the end of last season, The Stones have now won eight games in a row on the road and they made sure they bounced back from the disappointment of the defeat against Tonbridge on Saturday in the best possible manner.
United were the better side in the first half which was played at a fast tempo and on four minutes, good movement from Keelan Mooney was instrumental in opening up the Boreham Wood defence and the ball dropped to James Pinnock who had his back to goal. Pinnock was probably unable of how much time he had though and his shot on the turn flew wide.
Shortly after, and against the run of play, the home side had a great opportunity to take the lead when Elliot Buchanan found himself with only Andy Walker to beat. The Maidstone keeper managed to stay on his feet and made a good block only for the ball to fall straight back to Buchanan but with the goal at his mercy, he directed his header onto the bar.
The Stones continued to pile pressure on the Boreham Wood defence and they had a couple of half chances before Lloyd Blackman bundled in the opening goal on 29 minutes following an Ian Selley free-kick into the box.
As the half progressed, Jay Saunders then had two opportunities to extend Maidstone’s lead but his low shot on 33 minutes fizzed wide and then six minutes later, his header from a Pinnock crossed dropped wide.
After the break, the home side had a spell of pressure during which time Wes Daly dispossessed Elliot Bradbrook and swung in a cross which Luke Donnelly headed onto the post.
Then at the other end, Pinnock put Blackman in down the right hand side and from a tight angle, Blackman curled his shot wide of the post.
Thirteen minutes from time, Chris Watters got the better of Nathan Paul before firing the ball across the goal and his shot only just cleared the far post and two minutes later, Bradbrook went on a surging run down the left before entering the box and lofting the ball over the bar.
As the game entered stoppage time, Boreham Wood had a couple of corners and one of these lead to a goal mouth scramble but the Maidstone defence held firm and The Stones registered their fourth clean sheet of the season.
