The Stones Report

Maidstone United 1-1 Boreham Wood

Saturday 7th February 2009
Ryman Premier Division
Attendance: 319
Reporter: Ruth Tunnell

Maidstone United have now not won a game in five attempts after they let slip a goal lead to be held at home by Boreham Wood.

At least in the second half of this match, The Stones created a number of chances and they were perhaps unfortunate not to have edged the victory but they were made to pay for a moment of sloppy defending which led to Jon Wordsworth scoring eighteen minutes from time.

Chances were at a premium in the first half and the visitor's first came on 16 minutes when the ball got stuck underneath Ben Lewis' feet only for Lee Allinson to curl his shot well wide.

Then ten minutes later, Meshach Nugent chased a long ball forwards and was clattered into by Antony Anstead who had rushed from his area and the Boreham Wood keeper was saved from a red card by the fact that a couple of defenders had got back towards goal.

On 30 minutes, Elliot Bradbrook's corner from the right was just flicked wide of the near post by Blackman and then Anstead had to be alert to save a Bradbrook header.

At the other end, Chris Watters' corner struck Allinson inside the six yard box and the ball was then scrambled clear before a free-kick from Watters was only parried by Steve Northwood and the Maidstone keeper had to react quickly to push behind the shot on the rebound.

Then just four minutes after the restart, Nathan Paul blasted a cross into Jon Wordsworth's arm and the referee, Mr Hatzidakis, pointed to the spot. Blackman assumed responsibility for the kick and he fired The Stones into the lead for the first time since the 13 th December.

The Stones looked to quickly double their advantage and Bradbrook, Jay Saunders and Nugent all went close but Maidstone's defence fell apart on 72 minutes when Watters' corner all too easily picked out Wes Daly. Daly had time to line up a shot and his effort pinged off the post and in the resultant scramble, Wordsworth fired the ball over the line.

As the game moved towards its conclusion, it was Maidstone who looked the more likely to score but James Pinnock saw a shot blocked inside the six yard box before he struck a rising drive which just cleared the bar. In between, Peter Hawkins had an effort deflect just wide and then three minutes from time, Anstead could not claim an Aaron Lacy throw and with the Boreham Wood keeper stranded, the ball was cleared off the line.
