A thunderous free-kick from Roland Edge from nearly 35 yards was enough to see Maidstone win for the first time in the league for three week in a game dominated by the difficult conditions.
With Ben Lewis, Elliot Bradbrook and James Pinnock all restored to the starting line-up after recovering from injury, The Stones looked a lot more solid but they had Andy Walker to thank for keeping the scores level at the break.
On 23 minutes, Aaron Lacy's header gave Gabriel Fanburan possession and he slipped the ball to John Curran. With only Walker to beat, Curran elected to shoot across the Maidstone keeper and Walker made an excellent save. The ball bounced back up to Leon Gordon but he was wasteful and planted his header straight at Walker.
Then on 34 minutes, Curran got in behind the Maidstone defence when Ian Cox could not cut the danger out and Walker to make a double save to deny the Canvey striker before the ball was scrambled clear.
At the other end, Maidstone had two opportunities to score but on nine minutes, Cox stabbed the ball over from close range and then five minutes before half time, Elliot Bradbrook sent the ball over the top of the Canvey defence and into the path of Lloyd Blackman who stayed on his feet despite attention from Chris Moore but Blackman shot wide from a good position.
The second half saw The Stones enjoy more possession and on 56 minutes the visitor broke the deadlock when Blackman was fouled about 35 yards out and Edge stepped up to arrow the ball into the top left hand corner of the net to register his first goal for Maidstone in spectacular style.
Nine minutes later, Gordon tricked his way through the The Stones defence but after completing the hard part of the task, he scuffed his shot wide of the post.
Then on 78 minutes there was a big let off for Maidstone when substitute Leon Antione drilled the ball across goal and Fanburan tried to flick the ball into the net but the ball rolled against the left hand post.
As the game moved towards full time, The Stones closed the game out effectively and in fact, they came closest to scoring when James Pinnock's shot from a very tight angle was cleared off the line by Richard Halle and then the Maidstone striker struck the outside of the post with an effort from close to the right hand touchline.
