Maidstone United’s interest in the Ryman League Cup has ended after they were defeated by Aveley who are currently the leaders of Ryman One North.
The Stones got off to the best possible start when with just six minutes gone, Lloyd Blackman chased a long ball forward and lobbed Marc Palmer in the Aveley goal to give Maidstone the lead.
Three minutes later, the home side should have equalised when they broke quickly through Junior Dadson down the right hand side and he pulled the ball back into the middle only for Wayne Vaughan to trip over the ball when in a good position.
Aveley continued to push forwards whenever possible but they looked vulnerable on the break and Blackman had two further opportunities to score but he found the side netting with both of his shots.
Then on 34 minutes, a mistake from Ashley Russell let in Sean Thomas and some how Steve Northwood made an excellent double save to deny Thomas only for Russell to foul the Aveley forward just as it seemed as though the danger had passed. Vaughan stepped up to take the spot kick and he placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Just before the break, Aveley should have taken the lead when Sam Holloway crossed for Thomas who headed wide when well placed.
However, the home side did edge in front on 61 minutes when Christian Wheeler hit a tame shot goalwards which trickled past the static Northwood and into the left hand side of the goal.
Eleven minutes later, The Stones had a good chance to draw level when Ian Selley put Blackman clear but Palmer made a smart block with his feet and from the rebound, Blackman shot wide.
This was to prove a costly miss as with fifteen minutes remaining, Aveley made sure of their victory when Joao Carlos gained possession after Aaron Lacy had failed to control the ball and he advanced towards the edge of the area before smashing a fine finish past Northwood.
