A late equaliser from Andy Martin ensured that Maidstone United obtained their first draw of their pre-season campaign.

After Saturday’s heavy defeat against Ebbsfleet, The Stones looked more assured at the back although there were still moments of indecision and Chatham hit the woodwork twice before they took the lead from a goal which resulted from a free-kick into the box which the Maidstone defence could not clear.

The visitors dominated the first half but they never really put James Tedder in the Chatham goal under any concerted pressure. That said, Kevin Watson did strike the bar with a long range shot on 27 minutes and he also went close with another effort shortly afterwards which was scrambled away from the line.

Aaron Lacy replaced Roland Edge at the break and the Maidstone substitute nearly had an immediate impact when he raced down the right and delivered a good cross to Lloyd Blackman who saw his looping header bounce off the top of the bar.

Blackman then had another opportunity just after the hour when he was put clear by a ball from Ian Selley but Tedder was quick to come out and as the two players collided, the chance was lost.

On 69 minutes, a long Aaron Lacy throw was met by Watson and his header was tipped round the post before Martin initiated a good move with a quickly taken free-kick before getting into the box to meet the cross from Lacy only for his header to be held by Tedder.

The home side then took the lead but Maidstone continued to create chances and on 81 minutes, a cushioned header from Martin found substitute Alex Tiesse but his shot was weak.

Martin and Tiesse then combined again and this time it was Martin’s turn to be denied by a good save from Tedder but the Chatham keeper was finally beaten five minutes from time when Martin headed in a cross from Lacy.
