Maidstone United’s pre-season campaign has got off to a winning start thanks to a solitary goal from Ian Selley.
The game saw Lloyd Hume and Alan Walker experiment with a 3-5-2 formation in the first half with a back three of Ian Cox, Kevin Watson and Ben Lewis supported by Aaron Lacy and Roland Edge. Unfortunately, Edge’s Maidstone debut was cut short when he had to be substituted just before half time.
The line up in the first half also saw only three players start the game - Nathan Paul, Aaron Lacy and Ben Lewis- who had featured for The Stones in the final match of last season against Folkestone Invicta.
Maidstone enjoyed the best of the first half and on 23 minutes, an Elliot Bradbrook corner picked out Jay Saunder’s who saw his header blocked. Two minutes later, the same players combined again but this time Saunders arrived late to meet the cross and his header flashed wide.
There was little for goalkeeper Andy Walker to do for the majority his debut but he showed he has good concentration levels when he reacted smartly to turn the ball around his near post when a shot came through a crowd of players.
At half time, a number of changes were made to the side which included the introduction of Alex Tiesse and Ian Selley and it was Tiesse who set up the winning goal when he pulled the ball back to Selley who finished from six yards.
