After the elation of a late winner against Ramsgate, Maidstone United were on the receiving end of a last gasp goal as Jamie Cade secured the three points for Tonbridge with the game three minutes into stoppage time.
This was the visitor’s first shot on target of the afternoon and despite a lacklustre performance from The Stones, United still had enough chances to register their fourth win in a row but they could not find their way past Lee Worgan who was outstanding in the Tonbridge goal.
“To lose to a last minute goal is difficult to take,” said Lloyd Hume after the match. “We controlled the game from start to finish and their goalkeeper made four or five good saves. Their manager admitted on the radio that Tonbridge were lucky and I think that we deserved to win the game.”
The game was a dull affair which was not helped by a strong swirling wind and chances were few and far between in the first half. Indeed, the visitors only had two opportunities which came from free-kicks that were sent into the box and both of them were headed over the bar by Leon Legge.
At least The Stones tested Worgan and on nine minutes, John Wilfort slipped the ball into Meshach Nugent who forced the Tonbridge keeper into a smart save.
It wasn’t until the 28 th minute though that Maidstone threatened again when this time Ian Selley’s delivery into the box was knocked sidewards by Jay Saunders and Ian Cox had his first shot blocked by Worgan’s feet and his second effort was deflected wide by Legge.
Unfortunately the game did not improve after the break but Elliot Bradbrook tried to spark the game into life on 64 minutes when he hit a terrific volley towards the top left hand corner only for Worgan to make an equally impressive save to claw the ball around the post.
A minute later, Selley picked out Ben Lewis who was in space and the Maidstone defender could have tried to beat Worgan but he unselfishly squared the ball and the opportunity was lost.
Nine minutes from time, Worgan once again denied Bradbrook before Jay Saunders went agonisingly close with a chip from thirty yards.
Then with the game in stoppage time, Bradbrook conceded a free-kick close to the edge of the area which was swung into the box by substitute Fraser Logan. Unfortunately, Maidstone could not get the ball clear and predictably, Cade was on hand to smash in the winner from close range.
