After the excitement of the last gasp victory over Harlow in mid week, it was back down to earth with a bump for The Stones with a lackluster performance which saw them easily brushed aside by Tooting.
This was probably Maidstone's poorest display of the season and they only had one shot on target in the entire game when Dave King had to tip a good effort from James Peacock over the bar.
And if Tooting had been more accurate with their efforts on goal, then The Stones could have ended up on the end of an embarrassing scoreline.
After a quiet opening to the first half, The Stones gifted Tooting the opening goal on 26 minutes when Steve Northwood failed to deal with a back pass and gave the ball straight to Dean McDonald who had the simple tasking of knocking it in from eight yards.
Four minutes later, a clipped ball forwards picked out Paul Vines who turned past Ben Lewis before lifting the ball well wide and then on 37 minutes, an effort from Billy Marshall, who was close to the left hand touchline, curled just past the far post.
Shortly after the break, McDonald put Vines clear of Peter Hawkins but once again the Tooting striker was wasteful and he fired over before Kirk Watts picked out Marshall on 59 minutes only for Marshall to miss the target when well placed.
It was not until the 72 nd minute that Maidstone finally threatened when Lewis whipped in an excellent cross and Peacock's shot looked to be going in until King intervened and tipped the ball over the bar.
And this was to prove to be The Stones' second to last effort on goal of the game as Tooting dominated the final stages. With 13 minutes remaining, Peacock failed to gain possession just outside the Maidstone area and Watts sent a swerving effort towards the top right hand corner of the net but Northwood managed to get a vital touch to divert the ball onto the post.
At the other end, on 84 minutes, The Stones put the ball in the net only for it to be disallowed for a foul on the Tooting keeper King and one minute later, McDonald had an excellent chance to score but his effort was woeful and he put the ball wide with only Northwood to beat.
As The Stones pushed forwards in search of an equaliser, Tooting began to to create more opportunties and on 87 minutes, Vines got the better of Roland Edge but Northwood did well to push the shot from Vines over the bar.
However, one minute from time, the home side made sure of the victory when Lloyd Blackman lost possession close to the Tooting area and the play was quickly switched to the other end where Watts thumped the ball past Northwood to seal a miserable afternoon for The Stones.
